The 2012 Australian Junior Chess Championships, organised by the

Spensley Street Primary School in the inner Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill between Saturday 14th January and Sunday 22nd January. Five minutes walk from
Clifton Hill train station, plenty of parking, and close to the Yarra River and Merri Creek trails, make this a convenient location (
193 Spensley St, Clifton Hill - see
map), whether you are walking, riding, driving, training or flying.
The championships will be played on
Commemorative Chess Sets which will be available for sale after the competition.

The championships will continue with the family friendly format that was introduced last year:
- U16 / U18 championships from 14 to 22 Jan (9 days)
- U12 / U14 championships from 18 to 22 Jan (5 days)
- U8 / U10 championships from 14 to 16 Jan (3 days)
- Problem solving and lightning on the 17 Jan (1 day)
All championships will be 9 rounds. See championship
schedule and
rules for more details.
The 2012 Australian Junior Chess Championships is an official competition run under the auspices of the
Australian Chess Federation (ACF),
Australian Junior Chess League (AusJCL) and
Chess Victoria (CV).
If you want to stay informed about this competition and Australian junior chess then please
subscribe to the AusJCL bulletin.
Because the venue is close to an inner city station, most of the city accommodation should be fairly convenient. We have negotiated some special rates for nearby
accommodation.
Parents and grandparents should be able to look at many of the games semi-live using the
Tornelo system. Volunteers will be walking around recording the top boards on ipads as they are being played.
Prizes & Fees
With 12 championships to be decided, 36 trophies and over $5000 in prize money (see
prizes), the 2012 championships should be another great opportunity for Australian juniors to pursue their chess. There are no qualifications to enter, just complete the
online registration.
The championship
fees are the same as last year, despite rampant inflation everywhere else.

Coaching

Some players get coaching before and after the games during the competition. Many of Australia's best chess coaches will be at the competition, which provides a great opportunity for juniors to improve their chess. If you have not already organised a coach for yourself, then read about
coaching during the competition.
Don't worry if you are not getting coached (most players will not be coached), the best thing for your chess is actually playing in serious competitions, coaching is icing on the cake. A coach can only help you before and after a game, but during a game you are all on your own.
Read the
coaching during the competition article for a list of coaches advertising with the competition. This list includes:
Club Promotions
